John Boyd Dunlop and the Pneumatic Tire

John Boyd Dunlop (1840 – 1921), was born in Scotland, and went on to become an inventor and one of the founders of the Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Company in the United Kingdom.

According to the Dunlop website, John Boyd Dunlop created the first practical pneumatic tire in 1888, and with that, “began more than a tire company—he pioneered an entire industry.”

Also, according to their website, “Dunlop introduced the first use of Kevlar belts in motorcycle tires” and “produced the first original-equipment radial street tire.”

Dunlop Motorcycle Tires: Made In the USA

Back in 1920, “ground was broken in Buffalo, New York, for what would become the first Dunlop tire manufacturing facility in the United States. Dunlop is still the only manufacturer to produce motorcycle tires in the U.S.”
