Motorcycle Gloves: How Many Are Too Many?

How Many Pair of Motorcycle Gloves Do You Own?

If you have been riding a while,  you may have accumulated a collection of them over the years. Maybe you have motorcycle gloves for when it’s hot.  Maybe you’ve got more than one pair for when it’s cold.

If you are a rider who doesn’t avoid the rain, you may have different gloves that you’ve tried to keep your hands dry, including “rain covers,” which go over your primary gloves, and which can offer better wet-weather protection than “waterproof” motorcycle gloves.  (For prolonged rain riding, I’ve found it can be tough to keep my hands dry with gloves that are marketed as “waterproof” by their manufacturer).

Favorite Riding Gloves

Among your different pairs of riding gloves, you may very have your “favorite” pair. They might even be the most worn, and maybe even getting near the worn-out stage.  Those are likely the gloves offer you the best balance of comfort and tactile motorbike control, which have accompanied you over countless miles over the asphalt and/or dirt.

Two Functions of Motorbike Gloves

When it comes down to the nitty gritty, MOTORCYCLE GLOVESserve two primary functions:

#1)  Motorcycle gloves offer a biker a more comfortable, and therefore enjoyable and safer ride. If your hands get cramped, cold, sunburned, or fatigued, these conditions can adversely effect control of your bike, since your hands are operating the great majority of your bike’s main controls: throttle, front brake, and clutch, in addition to turn signals, high/low beam, and any additional features you may have.  Of course the primary steering inputs are guided through your hands, too.

Should you ever find yourself in any type of emergency situation, when instantaneous, precision command is most needed, your response time will be better if your hands are in good condition.

#2) Motorbike gloves protect your hands in the event of a fall. Arguably, this is the greatest service your gloves can offer, even if, ideally, they may never be called for that duty.  Your hands are extremely vulnerable to damage when you are separating from your bike in some undesired accident, even if it might be a very minor matter, such as getting bumped over in a parking lot, when a car pulls out quickly and unexpectedly.  Obviously, the more dramatic the circumstance, the more value your gloves will provide in terms of protection.

I’ve gone down in the dirt an uncountable number of times, pushing the envelope of my abilities.  But more significantly, I’ve also been in two  somewhat noteworthy crashes on the street, which resulted in two totaled motorcycles.

The good news is that in all those events, I had good gloves that kept my hands from sustaining injury.

So, is there such a thing as owning too many motorcycle gloves?

I can’t answer that for every individual’s circumstance, but there is definitely such a thing as not wearing the right gloves at the right time: and the “right time” is any time you are riding.
