Superman and Kevlar Motorcycle Gloves
KEVLAR MOTORCYCLE GLOVESwon’t help you stop bullets like Superman, or like Neo in “The Matrix” movie series.
However, Kevlar reinforced gloves will offer added protection to your hands in the event of a crash.
A Little Kevlar History
Kevlar was developed at DuPont in 1965, and was first commercially used in the early 1970s as a replacement for steel in racing tires.
The Dupont web site states, “Kevlar® brand fiber is an innovative technology from DuPont that combines high strength with light weight to help dramatically improve the performance of a variety of consumer and industrial products.”
In addition to reinforcing gloves, Kevlar has many other applications, ranging from bicycle tires and racing sails to body armor because of its high strength-to-weight ratio. Kevlar is often stated to be “…5 times stronger than steel on an equal weight basis…”
More pertinent to our needs, Kelvar is used for motorcycle safety clothing, especially as shoulder and elbow padding and more recently, as reinforcement for motorbike gloves.
Kevlar Reinforcement in Motorcycle Gloves
It should be emphasized that Kevlar is a “reinforcement” in the products that are marketed as “Kevlar Gloves.”
As a general rule of thumb, the more expensive a pair of “Kevlar” gloves are, the more Kevlar that is actually used as reinforcing material in the gloves.
However, some of the most expensive gloves may have other materials and features that contribute to their higher costs, in addition to the use of “Kevlar.”
