Yamaha Motorcycle BooksYamaha Motorcycle Books (and Piano Making?)

Those of us in the motorcycle world who have long recognized YAMAHAas one of the world’s largest producers of motorcycles might occasionaly wonder how it came to pass that they diversified into the music world, particularly into making pianos.  And on top of that, putting a triple, tuning fork logo on their motorbikes!

Well, truth can be stranger than fiction. In fact, Yamaha did NOT branch out from motorcycles to pianos.

The truth is the opposite.

Yamaha started making pianos long before they branched off and became a successful manufacturer of motorcycles.

A Little Yamaha History

Way back in 1887 (yes, that’s the 19th century, not the 20th century), Yamaha was incorporated to make pianos.

Yamaha has since expanded many times over and here in the 21st century they have become the world’s largest producer of musical instruments.

Not only do they make pianos, but they also make drums, guitars, brass instruments, woodwinds, violins, violas, celli, and vibraphones.

They didn’t stop there. Nowadays, Yamaha is also a leading manufacturer of semiconductors, computer related products, sporting goods, home appliances, specialty metals, Audio/Visual components and industrial robots.

Oh. They also make motorbikes.

Yamaha Motorcycles are Born

After Yamaha became the world’s largest piano manufacturer, THEN Yamaha branched over into motorized vehicles: way back in 1955.

The story goes that Yamaha’s research from producing pianos, and attendant research in metal alloys for improved acoustical performance, established a foundation for making sturdy and lightweight metal constructions.

Yamaha leveraged that knowledge and experience of producing metal frames to producing motorcycle parts and motorcycles.

And they didn’t stop there!

Yamaha Motor Company also produces all-terrain vehicles, boats, snowmobiles, outboard motors, and personal watercraft.

The next time you look at the Yamaha corporate logo (on a motorcycle or any of their other products), look a little closer and realize that it’s not a cluster of abstract lines:  Their logo is three tuning forks placed on top of each other in a triangular pattern.

OK, so much for today’s history lesson…let’s get back to the books about our subject:
