Proficient Motorcycling Series by David Hough
I have read many motorcycle books over the years. And I have read both of David Hough’s “Proficient Motorcycling” books. And I can say that these two are among my most highly recommended motorbike books for any riders.
However, for the purpose of this review, let’s stick to the first one, PROFICIENT MOTORCYCLING: The Ultimate Guide to Riding Well.
Proficient Motorcycling: The Ultimate Guide to Riding Well was first published in 2000. However, the very same title was updated and revised in 2008. (And this title is distinct from the second book in the series, which is MORE Proficient Motorcycling: Mastering the Ride, which was published in 2003).
Proficient Motorcycling Chapter Titles
The chapter titles give an indication of the subject matter covered: Risk, Motorcycle Dynamics, Cornering Tactics, Urban Traffic Survival, Booby Traps, Special Situations and Sharing the Ride.
There are plenty of photos and illustrations, as well as anecdotes, to clarify and simplify the material along the way.
David Hough and Proficient Motorcycling
Hough writes in a very practical, down to earth style and it is apparent throughout the book that he writes from a wealth of real-world experience on encountering and handling motorcycles and potential risky situations.
Hough offers practical advice for riding when it’s hot, as well as when it’s cold - real cold.
If you are a Californian, or live in another State, or a Country where lane-splitting is legal, he provides a useful section on riding between cars as safely as possible, with appropriate warnings.
He also has a section on group riding, and riding with passengers. He also opened my mind to the notion of sidecars, which I had never considered before (a passion of his).
Anyway, Proficient Motorcycling: The Ultimate Guide to Riding Well, is a classic among motorcycle riding books and is one worthy of a spot in your motorcycle library.
