Honda Motorcycle Books and Some Racing History

Modern HONDA MOTORCYCLES are indelibly connected to its racing heritage initiated by its Founder, Soichiro Honda.

This is not hard to understand since Mr. Honda was very enthusiastic about motorcycle and auto racing. In fact, it’s hard to separate Honda, the motorcycle company, from Honda, the Founder and his love of racing, which played a part in the start of his company.

At 30 years old, Soichiro Honda was seriously injured in an auto racing crash.  After he recovered, in 1937, he started his namesake company by manufacturing piston rings for small engines to be used in motorcycles.  In 1948, Mr. Honda began manufacturing the motorcycles themselves (at a time, after WWII, when his country was in need of economical and efficient transportation).

In 1959, Honda entered his first motorbikes into the Isle of Man TT race (not only a first for Honda, but a first for Japan), which generated significant international interest two years later.  In 1961, not only did Honda motorbikes win their classes, they took the first five places for both 125cc and 250cc classes.  That catalyzed worldwide attention for Honda motorcycles which soon evolved into becoming an internationally respected brand.

Also in 1959, Honda Motorcycles opened its first motorbike dealership in the United States.

Clever marketing (”You meet the nicest people on a Honda,”) and well-regarded,  fine engineering resulted in Honda motorcycles out-selling not only Harley Davidson in the United States, but also Triumph in England.

Honda’s explosive growth though the sixties included branching into car manufacturing (1967) and then becoming a billion-dollar multinational conglomerate.
