What is Kawasaki Heavy Industries?

For those familiar with Kawasaki motorcycles, one might imagine that the full name of KAWASAKI HEAVY INDUSTRIES must be a nod to their biggest and most powerful motorcycles.

In which case, it might be somewhat of a surprise to learn that KAWASAKI’S MOTORCYCLES are among the smaller machines they build.

In brief, Kawasaki makes BIG things for our world.

Here is a list of some of Kawasaki’s manufacturing sectors and related items:

Aerospace (aircraft, space systems, helicopters, simulators, jet engines, missiles and related electronic equipment)

Rolling stock (commuter trains, subway cars, freight trains, locomotives, monorails and new transit systems)

Shipbuilding (think BIG ships)

Energy plants and facilities (Are you thinking big enough, yet?)

Industrial equipment (including industrial plants, industrial robots, aerodynamic machinery, hydraulic and equipment)

Environment and recycling (municipal refuse incineration plants, water treatment systems, industrial waste recycling equipment)

Infrastructure (wheel loaders, construction machinery, tunnel boring machines, steel bridges, airport and port-related products, snowplows)

Oh yeah, they definitely make motorcycles, jet ski and ATVs.

Kawasaki Ships to Motorcycles

Company Founder, Shozo Kawasaki, established Kawasaki Tsukiji Shipyard in 1878 to build steel ships in Tokyo.

Although they continued to expand their operations over the following decades, after World War II Kawasaki was on track to become one of the heavy weight industrial conglomerates of Japan.

In 1949, Kawasaki’s Aircraft Company began the development of a motorcycle engine. The air-cooled, 148 cc, 4-stroke, single-cylinder engine entered production in 1953 and they produced their first complete Kawasaki motorcycle in 1954 (the Meihatsu).

By the early ’70s, Kawasaki established its reputation for making some of the most powerful motorcycles in the world.

And as you know, Kawasaki has since become one of the world’s major motorcycle manufacturers
