Octane Booster Riders: You Know Who You Are

Engine Octane Booster

TO BEGIN WITH, WHAT IS OCTANE?

The different octane ratings that you see every time you select which gas to put in your bike’s tank is a measure of that fuel’s resistance to engine “knocking.” Engine knocking is a rattling or pinging sound that results from the engine’s fuel-air mixture igniting before it’s supposed to.

The higher the octane number, the more resistant that gas is to knocking.

WHAT IS THE CORRECT OCTANE FOR MY BIKE?

Not all bikes require the same gas. For example, higher-performance motorbikes typically have higher-compression engines, which NEED higher octane gas to operate efficiently.

But other bikes, with lower compression, don’t need it.

The correct octane for your bike is simply the one stated in the owner’s manual for your bike. Paying more for higher octane gas and/or octane booster isn’t going to be worth the extra cost.

WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM AN OCTANE BOOSTER?

From a practical perspective, if your bike engine starts knocking or pinging even with the manufacturer’s recommended gas, switch to the next highest octane grade. Of course, if “premium” (higher octane) is already the recommended fuel for your motorcycle, and that’s what you are fueling your bike with, then an octane booster should help.

However, if the knocking or pinging continues after a few tanks of higher octane, there may be some engine maintenance in order.

For a rider that lives in a remote area where higher octane gas is not readily available, having octane booster in the garage is a way to keep your higher-performance engine happy.

WHICH BIKES ARE MORE PRONE TO ENGINE KNOCKING?

In short, older bikes.

Older motorbike engines may have accumulated carbon deposits in their combustion chambers.

That added space taken up by the deposits can effectively increase the bike’s inherent compression ratio, which would put it in the category of benefiting from higher-octane fuel.

However, there is one more candidate for an octane-booster, and you KNOW who you are….

RIDERS RELENTLESSLY ADDICTED TO HIGH PERFORMANCE

For a rider who already has a high-performance bike, with a high-compression engine, who is therefore normally feeding his machine high-octane gas, the only way to get it even higher is to boost it with an additive.

This would be the kind of guy/gal that may be looking for any and every kind of performance edge that is readily available.

Pouring a little extra go juice into the tank is easier than bolting on a new exhaust system. (Although most octane booster advocates probably already have an after market exhaust system!)

In which case, even comparing the nuances of performance improvements available from different brands of octane boosters becomes part of the evolution of living a high-performance life.
