Leather Motorbike Boots for Men
For many riders, wearing their leather motorcycle boots, even when they aren’t riding, gives them an ongoing foothold into their motorcycle passion throughout their day.
A biker’s feet are always in contact with the bike or the ground, and more likely than any other body part to be in contact with curbs, rocks, branches and/or other debris. In other words, even during routine rides, our feet and ankles are subject to small bumps and nicks that can go relatively unnoticed, as long as we are wearing good motorcycle boots.
And of course if you are a spirited rider who leans your bike low enough into corners that you periodically (or routinely) scrape your pegs and/or the sides of your boots, then your feet are REALLY hanging out at the margins of security. But, again, it’s the nature of good motorcycle boots to absorb such brushes without any repercussions on our feet at all.
The main point regarding motorcycle boots is wearing a pair that is COMFORTABLE, while offering protection for your feet and ankles.
Additionally, there are a number of other factors to consider….
Types of Leather Motorcycle Boots
There are more types of MENS MOTORCYCLE BOOTS than can be readily classified. Or, perhaps more accurately, there are some styles that seek to break the mold in terms of classification (see “weird” below).
Classic Leather Motorcycle Boots
Perhaps the most prominent leather boot for bikers, is the classic engineer style, which has been around forever, and could even be considered the prototypical “Biker Boot.” The good one are made of heavy duty leather, have strong soles, may have a steel toe, and are usually a “slip on” variety.
Sport Riding Motorcycle Boots
Leather motorcycle boots for sport riders are often purpose-built to offer even better ankle and shin protection in the event of a crash. As well, the good ones offer durable soles, and may have some type of reinforced toe. A number of these are waterproof, as well.
NOTE ON PROTECTIVE TOES: Protective steel toe reinforcements have been around in work boots for decades. They have also been desired for motorcycle boots. However, an argument against steel toes is that they can actually damage a rider’s feet in the event of an accident that results in the metal being crushed into a rider’s toes. A steel toe alternative would be a “composite” toe, which is a high-tech, plastic-like material that in some cases, is referred to as a “military toe.”
Waterproof Leather Motorcycle Boots
Some leather motorbike boots are waterproof. Some are not. But even those that are, typically are going to require routine maintenance (waterproof sprays or other leather applications), to keep out as much water as possible. But if you are a rider who is out in the rain all day, you are truly putting that “waterproof” designation to the test and it may not hold up.
Men’s Leather Motorcycle Boots with Zippers
Some boots are easier to put on and take off than others. Manufacturers make boots with zippers to allow them to be as easy as possible to get your feet into and out of them.
For a number of zipper boots, it’s not even readily apparent that they have a zipper, since it may be hidden.
Also, don’t let the idea of a zipper fool you into thinking that a boot with a zipper cannot be waterproof. “Some” of them are, which usually means that there is a leather pleat that unfolds when you unzip the boot, so in effect, there is always a water seal, regardless of whether the zipper is open or closed.
Leather Motorcycle Boots with Laces
Boots with laces deserve a special mention because laces “can” present a safety hazard if they are not always securely tied. No loose ends should ever dangle near any motorcycle parts. If a loose lace were to get caught in a chain, for example, that could result in a very bad riding day.
On the other hand, even getting a lace caught on a non-moving part, such as a footpeg, could result in tripping a rider as he/she is dismounting.
Conversely, laced boots do offer the advantage of being able to secure the boot much more securely around your ankles than zipper boots or slip on boots.
Just be sure to always DOUBLE TIE your laces!
Weird Leather Motorcycle Boots
There are more styles of motorcycle boots than can be listed here. Some of them are simply fashion statements, more than they are practical motorcycle safety gear for feet.
